Refridgerator Magnets

Sure magnetic poetry is cool, but why not add some magnetic panache of your own to the old fridge? Creating your own refrigerator magnets is easier than you think! All you need is a glue gun, the small round magnets found at craft stores, and any small glue-able objects your heart desires: scrabble tiles, typewriter keys, buttons, dominoes, dice, foreign coins… you get the idea! If you have a free afternoon or a rainy Sunday morning, why not spend it relaxing and creating with a project that glue gun gurus Christine Stickler and Kitty Harmon call "easy as they come, perfect for de-stressing after a full day."

To begin, assemble your materials. If you don't have everything you want, a trip to the craft store is the perfect time to plug in a battery-powered glue gun (such as the ColdHeat glue gun) and let it heat. Once you get to the craft store, begin looking for refrigerator magnets and any other crafty odds and ends you might want. The best refrigerator magnets to use are the new neodymium iron boron (NIB) known in the craft world as "neodymium" or "rare earth" magnets. These new magnets are reputed to be stronger and less expensive than their counterpart, the samarium cobalt magnet, but both are a fine choice.

When you get home with your assembled treasures, it’s time to start gluing. Just take your cordless glue gun off the charger and begin gluing objects to the magnets using careful dabs of hot glue. The ColdHeat glue gun allows you to glue at all angles, so feel free to get creative with layering or unusual arrangements. But if you want to stick to basic magnets, that's great too.

Stuck on ideas? Here are a few creative suggestions from the glue gun addicts at "Wild With a Glue Gun":

- Layer buttons slightly off center and sew thread through the holes
- Use a glue gun to attach Scrabble tiles that spell out a friends' name
- Create your own magnetic poetry with creatively cut letters of colorful fonts and scripts

No matter how you decorate it, we're sure your fridge will love its new makeover!
