If you have a pair of boring bar stools already, or don't want to spend a fortune on fancy ones, buy a plain pair and jazz them up using your trusty glue gun. If you have a cordless glue gun like the one from ColdHeat, you can easily spend a happy afternoon in the garage or on the porch adding style to your bar stools! This cool glue gun project is a perfect pre-summer pastime that gets your outdoor seating ready for all those garden parties and BBQ's!
You will need:
bar stools
1 yard of oil cloth fabric
assorted acrylic paints and brushes
varnish
twelve upholstery tacks
a hammer
thick upholstery foam
felt marker
scissors
one yard of fringe trim
medium grade sandpaper
glue gun and hot glue to seal it all together.
Begin by lightly sanding the legs of the barstools. (If your glue gun isn't fully charged, now is a great time to plug it in to make sure it is nice and hot for gluing.) Turn the bar stool upside down and apply the piece of foam. Use your marker to trace around the seat of the stool on the foam. Cut along the shape and set the foam aside.
Now, select your favorite paint color and begin painting the entire bar stool except the seat and let it dry. Painted accents on the bar stool legs add extra panache. After the paint dries, apply multiple coats of varnish to seal the results.
Now it's time to put your glue gun to work. Turn the barstools upright and use your glue gun to attach the piece of foam you set aside earlier. Continue using glue gun until you are sure the foam is secure around the edges. Trim any excess foam until it conforms with the size of the seat.
Next, turn the stool upside down again and apply the swath of oil cloth fabric. Pull the fabric up around the edges, leaving an extra six inches all the way around and mark the fabric there for cutting. Throw the excess away.
Use your glue gun to apply a healthy amount of adhesive to the seat of the bar seat and press the cloth into it to seal it. Continue all the way around the seat gathering the fabric at the edges so it looks even and flat. Use you glue gun to secure any loose fabric.
Flip the bar stool over and get creative. The cordless ColdHeat glue gun allows you to attach at any angle, so don't be afraid to get crazy with festive trim and decor.
Once you are finished, feel free to fix yourself a frilly drink to go with your fancy new bar stools!
